History & cultural connections
The Sommier family house on rue de l’Arcade
The house grew out of the Sommier family’s success in sugar refining. According to the hotel’s history, three brothers left Burgundy in the early nineteenth century and established a refinery on the outskirts of Paris. Alfred, son of the youngest brother, took charge at eighteen and became the central figure associated with the mansion.[1]
In 1860 Alfred’s father acquired the plot near the Madeleine during the transformation of Paris under Haussmann. Architect Joseph Lesoufaché designed twin cut-stone buildings with a courtyard between them and a garden behind. That arrangement still explains the hotel’s sequence of street façade, sheltered court and green interior space.[1]
Alfred lived at 20 rue de l’Arcade, where Jeanne de Barante joined him after their marriage in 1872; their son Edme was born the following year.[1]
The mansion was converted into a hotel in 2018 by descendant Richard de Warren de Rosanbo. Fireplaces, gilded mirrors and oak floors were retained alongside bespoke new furnishings, giving guests a view of the house’s original interiors.[2]
