About Frances Steloff

Frances Steloff founded the Gotham Book Mart in New York in 1920 and built it into a meeting place, bookshop and informal institution for modern literature. She stocked experimental and restricted writing when conventional channels often would not.

The Ineffable Frances Steloff: A Photographic Visit places her at the center of her working environment. Herta Hilscher-Wittgenstein’s photographs and comments by Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin record the personal debt writers felt to her.
