History & cultural connections
From Hôtel Daniel to a hotel inspired by Persian Letters
Hôtel Daniel opened at 8 rue Frédéric Bastiat in 2004, with decorative influences from Europe and Asia. Hôtel de Montesquieu now occupies the same Haussmannian building.[1]
In 2022, the property underwent a complete renovation and reopened as Hôtel de Montesquieu. The hotel says its accommodation was reduced from 26 rooms to 18 rooms and suites to provide more space. The changes also introduced an honesty bar and a fitness room.[1]
The new name refers to Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, and to his 1721 novel Persian Letters. In that book, Persian travelers observe Paris through letters sent home. The hotel presents its Persian-inspired decoration as an imaginative response to the novel, rather than a reconstruction of a historical Persian interior.[1]
For Hôtel de Montesquieu’s 2022 renovation, the owner worked with architect Elliott Barnes. Their palette combined vermilion, midnight blue, gold, celadon green and rose with patterned wallpapers and vintage or restored furniture. They designed the rooms individually, giving each a different interior.[1][2]
Literary inspiration
Montesquieu’s Persian Letters
The hotel identifies the 1721 novel as the inspiration for its name and Persian-influenced interiors.[1]
