The history of Hôtel Edouard 7
This stretch of avenue de l'Opéra, between rue de l'Échelle and rue Louis-le-Grand, was opened by a decree of 27 June 1876, and the avenue's buildings were given their numbers in 1877.[1]
In 1885 the building was the Hôtel Bellevue. An advertisement in Harper's Handbook for Travellers in Europe lists it at 39 avenue de l'Opéra and 8 rue d'Antin, with reading and smoking rooms and a lift, and names the proprietor as L. Hauser.[2]
From 11 January to 29 February 1892, the painter Paul Liot showed his landscapes and seascapes at the Hôtel Bellevue, according to the art weekly La Chronique des arts et de la curiosité.[3]
By the mid-1920s the hotel at number 39 was called the Hôtel Edouard VII. In 1926 the writer Basil Woon described Delmonico's, a popular restaurant that had opened in the hotel two years earlier.[4][5]
After her arrest in November 1941, the Resistance agent Mathilde Carré was taken first to the Hotel Edouard VII at 39 avenue de l'Opéra, which German security services were then using as offices.[6]
The hotel's own history says King Edward VII made it his Paris residence. In the 1880s and 1890s, however, the building traded as the Hôtel Bellevue, and the Edouard VII name is recorded at this address only from the 1920s. The Besse group bought the hotel in 2007, and it reopened in April 2016 after three years of works, redecorated by Christophe Daudré.[7][2][4][8][9]

Useful questions, clear answers
Where is Hôtel Edouard 7?
The hotel is at 39 avenue de l'Opéra, 75002 Paris, on the corner of rue d'Antin. The hotel gives a five-minute walk to Opéra (line 8) and Pyramides (line 14) Métro stations.
Which rooms look at the Opéra?
Classic, Superior and Deluxe rooms, the Junior Suite and the Suite are each sold in an Opéra View version facing up the avenue to the Palais Garnier. Book that version to be sure of the view.
Is breakfast open to non-residents?
Yes. The buffet breakfast at La Cuisine de l'E7 is open to visitors as well as guests, from 7 am to 10:30 am on weekdays and until 11 am at weekends.
Are there accessible rooms?
The hotel says it has three rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility, with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. Confirm the details when you book.
Did King Edward VII live here?
The hotel says he did, but in the 1880s and 1890s the building was the Hôtel Bellevue, and the Edouard VII name appears at this address only from the 1920s, after the king's death in 1910.
Is this the Hôtel Édouard VII where the Italian delegation stayed in 1919?
Accounts of the 1919 Peace Conference place the Italian delegation at "the Hotel Edouard VII". A separate 250-room hotel of that name opened in 1913 on the new rue Édouard-VII, near the Madeleine, and the accounts give no address, so the stay cannot be placed at 39 avenue de l'Opéra.
