History & cultural connections
The history of the Grand Hôtel
The banking brothers Émile and Isaac Pereire had the Grand Hôtel built in 1861–1862 beside the site of the future opera house. It had about 800 rooms. The hotel dates its inauguration by Empress Eugénie to 5 May 1862; a City of Paris history panel outside the hotel gives 14 July 1862.[1][2][3]
Most histories name Alfred Armand as the architect, while the French heritage register credits Jacques Ignace Hittorff and Charles Rohault de Fleury. The façades, the former dining room, now the Opéra Ballroom, and the decorated room of the Café de la Paix have been listed historic monuments since 1975.[2][4]
In October 1869 the journalist Henry Morton Stanley came to the Grand Hotel to see James Gordon Bennett Jr., the young manager of the New York Herald. In How I Found Livingstone (1872), Stanley describes knocking at Bennett's door here and being told to go to Central Africa and find the explorer David Livingstone.[5]
Victor Hugo hosted suppers at the Grand Hôtel to mark three theatre milestones: the revival of his play Hernani in December 1877, the 100th performance of a stage version of Notre-Dame de Paris in October 1879, and the 100th performance of Quatrevingt-treize in March 1882. The Maison de Victor Hugo holds an engraving of the 1879 supper and the printed invitation to the 1882 one.[6][7][8]

Émile Zola
In Zola's novel Nana (1880), the title character, a fictional actress, dies of smallpox in room 401 of the Grand Hôtel.[9]
Literary inspiration
Ernest Hemingway
In The Sun Also Rises (1926), the narrator Jake Barnes and his friend Robert Cohn, both fictional, walk up to the Café de la Paix for coffee after lunch.[10]
