The 149 rooms include 26 suites, all designed by Charles Zana with Art Deco touches. Rooms run from 20 m² City Singles for one guest to Premium rooms of up to 35 m², and suites from 38 m² to the 110 m² Suite Honoré on the top floor, which has a view of the Eiffel Tower. The history of the Samaritaine de Luxe
Before the department store, number 27 was home to the toy shop Au Nain Bleu. A poster from around 1880 advertises it at 27 boulevard des Capucines, facing the Grand Hôtel.[1]
Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, the founders of the Samaritaine department store by the Pont-Neuf, commissioned a branch here for wealthy customers. The architect Frantz Jourdain designed it with Georges Bourneuf; it was built from 1914 to 1916 and opened in January 1917. Its great staircase has the lifts built into its structure.[2]
From 1925 to 1927 Ernest Cognacq showed his collection of 18th-century art in four temporary exhibitions inside the store. The collection then went to the Musée Cognacq-Jay in the neighbouring building, which President Gaston Doumergue opened on 4 June 1929.[3][4]
The store closed in 1981, and in 1986 the building became offices and shops. Its street façade, roof, staircase and lift had been registered as a historic monument in 1981. The insurer AXA bought the building in 2012, conversion works began in March 2018, and the hotel opened in August 2021 as the first Kimpton hotel in France.[3][2][5][6][7]
