The Paris Atlas · Beyond the booking
History & cultural connections
A Haussmann building reimagined by Anouska Hempel
The hotel’s design begins with an existing Haussmann-style building at the corner of rue Washington and rue Chateaubriand. Anouska Hempel transformed it into Monsieur George, giving different floors their own visual character. The building’s Parisian exterior frames a more theatrical interior of mirrors, dark lacquer, glass partitions and carefully controlled color.[1][2]
The renovation included purpose-made architectural details. In October 2020, Haddonstone documented a commission from Hempel for 18 cast-stone brackets used inside the hotel, on the facade and at the main entrance. Warm uplighting was intended to turn these pieces into stone accent lights, making a small exterior detail part of the overall design.[3]
Below the public rooms, former vaulted cellars became a wellness retreat. Exposed stone in the sauna and black-and-white mosaics in the hammam preserve a sense of the lower-level structure while changing its function. Above ground, the garden duplex and rooftop-view rooms use the building’s differing positions to create distinct kinds of stay.[1][4]
