History & cultural connections
The history of the Hôtel Vernet
Rue Vernet is named after a family of French painters: Claude Joseph Vernet, his son Carle Vernet and his grandson Horace Vernet. It was called rue des Vignes until 1864. This part of the street was opened between 1848 and 1866 on the site of the Château des Fleurs, a pleasure garden with music and dancing.[1][2]
In 1910 number 25 was the private house of a M. R. Étienne. In November 1912 a developer named Mijois applied for a permit to put up a seven-storey building on the site, designed by an architect named Sélonier. Mijois's firm sold electrical fittings and bronzes.[2][3][4]
In January 1913, while the building was going up, the Percepied brothers registered a company to run a furnished hotel at 25 rue Vernet. By June 1914 the Hotel Vernet at that address appeared in a classified advertisement in the Paris edition of the New York Herald. The hotel gives 1913 as the year it was founded.[5][6][7]
The hotel says the iron frame of the glass roof over its restaurant is the work of the engineer Gustave Eiffel, and some of its newer pages say the frame is 'attributed to' him. No document of 1912 to 1914 found so far names Eiffel or his company at 25 rue Vernet. Eiffel was 80 when the building was designed.[8][3]
The B Signature group bought the hotel business for €10 million in December 2012. The interior designer François Champsaur then redesigned the hotel. The bar and reception have a ceiling fresco, drawings and rugs by the painter Jean-Michel Alberola, born in 1953 in Saïda, Algeria. In 2026 Alberola's daughter restored the fresco under his supervision.[9][10]
