History & cultural connections

A family residence, redesigned as Villa Marquis

Villa Marquis occupies a former residence of the Hurault de Vibraye family. Meliá describes the property as a home for marquises and artists from 1823. The present hotel’s name refers to that aristocratic past: a marquis is a French noble title.[1]

Architects Álvaro Sans and his daughter Adriana redesigned the hotel in the early 2020s. The refurbishment introduced velvet furnishings and rose-gold details alongside technical diagrams and engineering drawings inspired by Paris. These are modern interiors within an older building, rather than preserved rooms from the family residence.[2][1]

Dos Almas, the restaurant at Villa Marquis, combines French and Spanish influences. In 2022, a visiting journalist watched a flamenco performance there by dancer Ruben Molina, part of the restaurant’s program at the time. Dos Almas remains the hotel’s restaurant today.[2][3]
