L'Olympia
Three engagements across thirty-four years. Calloway topped the bill from 22 May 1958, on a French variety programme and with a pick-up orchestra; the run was announced through 9 June and cut short, because Paris that month was consumed by the Algerian crisis that ended the Fourth Republic and, as the Afro-American reported, the King of Hi-de-Ho played to many empty seats. He returned on 20 July 1987, and again on 8 July 1992 — his last performance in France.
