A Brandeis literary scholar, Milton Hindus admired Journey to the End of the Night enough to open a correspondence with its author in Danish exile, and in 1948 traveled to visit him. The encounter produced The Crippled Giant (1950), his unsparing record of the stay — admiration for the novelist colliding with everything else — and one of the essential primary documents in the long argument over Céline.
