History & cultural connections
The history of 1–7 rue Jean-Richepin
Rue Jean-Richepin was opened in 1913 on the former gardens of the Château de la Muette. It was first called rue Camille-Charpentier, then rue Émile-Augier, and in 1950 it was named after the poet Jean Richepin (1849–1926).[1][2]
The hotel occupies a building at the corner of rue Jean-Richepin and rue de la Pompe. By 1931 the French postal and telephone administration owned the land at 35–39 rue de la Pompe. In 1961 the City of Paris reported that the administration planned to build a main post office and a telephone exchange there. The present building, of six storeys over two basement levels, dates from the mid-1960s, and a post office still occupies part of it at 39 rue de la Pompe. The hotel describes the building as a 1970s postal sorting centre.[3][4][5][6]
In January 2015 the City approved converting part of the building into a 59-room hotel with a restaurant, a spa and a pool. Evok, a hotel group founded in 2014 by the businessman Pierre Bastid with the designers Romain Yzerman and Emmanuel Sauvage, opened Brach Paris in the autumn of 2018. Philippe Starck designed the interiors, and the artist Ara Starck painted the lobby ceiling and the restaurant mural. Evok also runs Nolinski Paris near the Louvre and a Brach hotel in Madrid.[7][8][9][10]
