History & cultural connections
The history of 30 avenue George V
Avenue George V was opened in 1858 as avenue de l'Alma and renamed in 1918 after George V, King of the United Kingdom (1865–1936). Rue Pierre-Charron, at the hotel's corner, was named in 1879 after Pierre Charron (1541–1603), a French moralist and the author of the Traité de la Sagesse.[1]
The hotel occupies a former office and shop building of seven to ten storeys, built in the 1970s according to the Paris urban planning agency's building data. A permit approved in June 2017 allowed its conversion into a hotel: four storeys on the courtyard side were demolished and rebuilt, and a two-storey building with a planted roof was added in the garden.[2][3]
The architects Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel, who design all Bvlgari hotels, worked on the building with the French firm Valode & Pistre, which redesigned its façade in Paris stone. The Bvlgari Hotel Paris opened on 2 December 2021 and was later added to France's list of Palace hotels.[4][5][6][7]
Across the avenue stands the Four Seasons Hotel George V, opened in 1928. A short walk south, at 23 avenue George V, is the American Cathedral in Paris, begun in 1881 to designs by the English architect George Edmund Street.[8]
