History & cultural connections
The Hôtel de Montbrun and its present-day interiors
Cour des Vosges occupies a seventeenth-century private mansion formerly called the Hôtel de Montbrun. The French term hôtel particulier means a private mansion. It describes the building’s earlier use, before it became accommodation for travelers.[1][2]
Architects Yann Le Coadic and Alessandro Scotto preserved painted ceiling beams and historic terracotta floors. They combined those features with furniture inspired by the 1970s. Some ceilings reach five meters, giving the rooms proportions inherited from the old mansion.[1]
Art director Amélie du Chalard selected sculptures, tapestries and design objects for the rooms. Bookseller Anatole Desachy chose rare editions, photography books and literary works. These are deliberate parts of the hotel’s present-day interiors.[1]
The designers imagined a family of art collectors who had lived here for generations. That family is a design story, rather than a documented line of residents. The objects and books were assembled to give each room the feeling of a furnished home.[1]
