History & cultural connections
A former convent with interiors inspired by Joséphine
The hotel says its building incorporates the remains of a seventeenth-century convent. Architects Didier and Fabrice Knoll handled the restructuring, while Bambi Sloan created the interiors. Their work gave an older Marais building a new use as a 24-room hotel.[2][3][1]
JoBo combines the beginnings of Joséphine and Bonaparte. Joséphine is the inspiration for the design, rather than a documented former resident of this hotel. Sloan drew on the Directoire period and the roses associated with Joséphine’s garden at Malmaison.[1][2]
For the wall coverings, Sloan searched the archives of textile maker Le Manach. Maison Pierre Frey reprinted selected patterns for the project, including designs called La Cocarde and Roses et Dentelles. The hotel’s description also records custom carpets and individually decorated ceiling beams.[2]
The design continues through the courtyard entrance, bedrooms and bar: floral patterns, lozenge-shaped mirrors, black swans and leopard print appear in different combinations. These are elements of a modern hotel interior inspired by an earlier period, rather than surviving furnishings from Joséphine’s home.[2]
