History & cultural connections

The history of Hôtel des Arts Montmartre and rue Tholozé

Rue Tholozé is named after General Henri Alexis Tholozé (1781–1853), who served in the French campaigns in Algeria. It lay in the village of Montmartre before Montmartre became part of Paris in 1860, and it was classified as a public street in 1877. The street climbs towards the Blute-fin, one of the last two windmills on the hill of Montmartre, which together are known as the Moulin de la Galette.[1][2]

The hotel's own history dates it to 1901. The Lameyre family has run the hotel since the early 1960s. The family describes the hotel of the 1960s as a simple guesthouse where painters finished their work in the courtyard and dancers from the Moulin Rouge stayed. It gained its third star in 2006 and its fourth in 2020.[3][4][5]

Across rue Tholozé, at number 10, Studio 28 opened in 1928 as one of the first avant-garde cinemas in Paris. Surrealist artists and writers went there between the wars. In December 1930 Catholic youth groups and members of far-right political groups attacked a screening there of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí's film L'Âge d'or. Jean Cocteau designed the auditorium's décor.[6][7]
