History & cultural connections
From a neighborhood bakery to a Christian Lacroix hotel
The hotel occupies a former bakery at the corner of rue de Poitou and rue de Saintonge. France’s heritage register dates the shop decoration to 1900, within a seventeenth-century building. It says a bakery may have existed on the site by the late seventeenth century.[1]
The painted decoration came from the Benoist et Fils workshop, which specialized in food shops; the register identifies Ripoche as the installer. The storefront combines a wooden frame with painted canvases protected by glass. Its subjects include a windmill, a sower and a harvester.[1]
The storefront and interior decoration were protected by a decree of May 23, 1984. The register describes a painted sky on the ceiling, seasonal landscapes and flower garlands. Those details explain why the bakery’s appearance matters even after its use changed.[1]
Christian Lacroix designed the hotel’s individual rooms and suite around the building’s irregular spaces. The former shopfront remains the most visible reminder of the bakery, while the bedrooms introduce the designer’s fabrics, patterns and color combinations.[2]
The hotel also recounts a story that Victor Hugo came here to buy bread while living on Place des Vosges. It explicitly calls this a legend. The documented bakery decoration and heritage listing do not establish that visit.[2][1]
