History & cultural connections

The history of Fauchon L'Hôtel Paris

The hotel joins two buildings on the corner of place de la Madeleine and boulevard Malesherbes. The hotel describes them as Second Empire buildings. Boulevard Malesherbes is named after Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, a minister under Louis XV and Louis XVI who was one of Louis XVI's defenders at his trial.[1][2]

Before the hotel, the corner at 11 place de la Madeleine held the flagship shop of the glassmaker Baccarat, which closed in 2015. At 4 boulevard Malesherbes stood the cocktail bar Le Forum, which the Paris guide Sortiraparis dates to 1918. The hotel's tea room, Le Jardin des Thés, refers to the Baccarat shop that stood here.[3][4][5][1]

Fauchon opened the hotel on 1 September 2018 as its first hotel, in partnership with the Esprit de France hotel group. The architect Richard Martinet wrote the brief, and the studio Atelier Paluel-Marmont designed the interiors.[6][7][1]

Across the boulevard at number 9, Marcel Proust grew up in his family's flat, where the Prousts lived from the 1870s until 1900.[8]
