History & cultural connections

The history of Le Burgundy Paris and 8 rue Duphot

Rue Duphot was opened in 1807 on land that had belonged to the convent of the Conception. It is named after Léonard Duphot (1770–1797), a French general killed in Rome. The hotel says it opened in 1850 and that its English name, Burgundy rather than the French Bourgogne, was probably chosen to appeal to British travelers of the Victorian era. An 1864 Paris trade directory lists a hotel called Burgundy at 8 rue Duphot. Directories name the hotelier as Bécard in 1888 and Madame Bécard in 1893. In 1897 the Hotel Burgundy advertised in The American Register, an English-language newspaper published in Paris. A 1913 directory still lists it.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

The French poet Charles Baudelaire, author of Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil), fell in the church of Saint-Loup in Namur, Belgium, around 15 March 1866 and lost most of his speech. On 4 July 1866 he entered Dr. Émile Duval's nursing home in Paris. During his first weeks there, his mother, Caroline Aupick, lodged in a furnished hotel at 8 rue Duphot. On 10 July she wrote from there to the critic Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve that her son could say only two or three words. Her letter gives the address but not the hotel's name. Paris directories list the Hôtel Burgundy at that number in 1864 and 1888. Caroline Aupick went home to Honfleur, in Normandy, shortly after 23 July. The hotel presents its bar, Le Charles, as a tribute to the poet, and its restaurant is called Le Baudelaire.[8][9][3][4][10]

Société Hôtel Burgundy, the company that runs the hotel today, was registered in 1956. In 2007 the Hôtel Burgundy was a three-star hotel with 89 rooms. It had a breakfast room under a glass roof and a small lounge with a fireplace and original photographs of the painters Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí and the poet Jacques Prévert.[12][11]

By 2009 the hotel had taken the name Le Burgundy. The hotel says it was extensively renovated in 2010, and by 2011 it advertised itself as a five-star hotel with a spa and a 15-meter pool. Guy de Rougemont (1935–2021), a painter and sculptor elected to France's Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1997, made the black-marble floor piece threaded with brass on the ground floor and the sculpture in the glass-roofed atrium. According to Paris Capitale magazine (2018), the architect Vincent Bastie planned the 59 rooms and Patrick Juliot designed the interiors. The hotel names Juliot as a designer but names no architect.[13][2][14][15][16][17][10][18][19]

In October 2012 the trade paper L'Hôtellerie Restauration reported that CHG Participations, a private family investment fund, had bought the hotel from the Dussort and Hennessy family. In May 2026 the hotel unveiled Junior Suites redesigned by the interior architect Jean-Philippe Nuel and a new Executive Suite, also his design.[20][21]
