History & cultural connections
The history of Maison Athénée and 19 rue de Caumartin
Rue de Caumartin was opened under letters patent of 3 July 1779 and named after Antoine Louis Lefèvre de Caumartin, the provost of the merchants of Paris at the time.[1]
From 1897 to 1929 the Galerie des Artistes Modernes, run by the art dealers Jules Chaîne and Félix Simonson, had its address at 19 rue Caumartin. In November 1897 it held the first exhibition of the Société des peintres-lithographes, a society of painters working in lithography. The age of the present building is not known, so it is not certain that the gallery occupied it.[2][3][4]
A 20-room hotel, then called the Hôtel de l'Athénée, was operating at the address by 2001. Sylviane Sanz's company took it over in 2008, the designer Jacques Garcia redecorated it, and in 2014 it was renamed Maison Athénée. In September 2026 control of the company that runs the hotel passed to the company Oryx.[5][6][7]
