History & cultural connections
A 2009 hotel on a former theater site
Renaissance Paris Arc de Triomphe Hotel opened in 2009 on the site of the former Théâtre de l’Empire. Christian de Portzamparc designed the new building on avenue de Wagram. His practice dates the project from 2003 to 2009 and identifies Marriott as its operator.[1][2]
Christian de Portzamparc gave the hotel a facade of alternating curved glass bays. These projecting windows turn toward the Arc de Triomphe, place de l’Étoile and avenue des Ternes. Pale glazing and thin horizontal metal bands make the hotel visually distinct from the surrounding stone buildings.[2]
Christian de Portzamparc’s 2003–2009 Renaissance hotel project created a view through the block from avenue de Wagram. A large entrance passage leads toward a sloping interior garden and the nineteenth-century Salle Wagram performance hall. The architect reworked the hall’s facade to make it visible and accessible from the avenue.[2]
The original project credited Era Studios for interior design, Desseins for its execution and landscape designer Régis Guignard of Méristème for the garden. The hotel has since refreshed its rooms, renovated its meeting spaces and introduced Solis Bar & Restaurant. Its current interiors therefore include later changes to the 2009 building.[2][1]

Parc Monceau
An unusually theatrical park in the 8th arrondissement, full of deliberate follies — a colonnade round a pond, a pyramid, fake ruins — laid out in the 1770s as a private garden and opened to the public in 1861. It is where the young Marcel Proust played, and where he met his first love in July 1886.
