History & cultural connections
The history of the Fondation Thiers
Place du Chancelier-Adenauer was called the rond-point Bugeaud until 1974, when it was renamed after Konrad Adenauer (1876–1967), Chancellor of West Germany from 1949 to 1963.[1]
The house was built in 1890–1892 as the Fondation Thiers, a residence where about fifteen young scholars without money could live and study free of charge for three years. Félicie Dosne commissioned it to carry out the last wish of her sister Élise, the widow of the statesman Adolphe Thiers, on land the family had owned. The architect was Alfred Aldrophe. Félicie Dosne visited the building site every day, according to Le Figaro in April 1891.[2][3][4]
The first five scholars of the Fondation Thiers moved in by May 1893. The house had a library of more than 8,000 volumes from the collection of Adolphe Thiers, President of France from 1871 to 1873, and a monumental double staircase. Its first director, the historian Barthélemy Hauréau, lived in the building. The façades, the entrance pavilions with their gate and the staircase have been a listed historic monument since 1980.[3][4]
In the 1980s the building became the home of a private club, the Saint James Club, and it has been run as a hotel and club since the early 1990s. The hotel says its Library Bar was the library of the Fondation Thiers, the scholars' residence that occupied the house from 1893. The designer Laura Gonzalez later redesigned the whole house.[5][6]
