About Julie Vellay
Julie Vellay came from a wine-growing family at Grancey-sur-Ource in Burgundy and was working as a maid in the Pissarro household in Paris when she and Camille Pissarro began their relationship. His family disapproved. They lived together for years before marrying in London in 1871, during the war exile.
She bore eight children and kept the family going through the long stretch when Impressionist paintings had no market, growing vegetables at Eragny and pressing her husband about money he would rather not have discussed. Six of the children who survived became artists. She outlived him by twenty-three years.
