Piano and Rogers entered the open competition for the Plateau Beaubourg together with Gianfranco Franchini, and their entry was chosen on 19 July 1971 from 681 submissions. Piano was thirty-three and Rogers thirty-seven, and neither had built at that scale. They practised as Piano and Rogers until the Centre Pompidou opened in January 1977.
