The friendship began at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, where both were students and budding writers on The Magpie, the school's literary magazine — the same school that produced Richard Avedon. Native Sons (2004) collects what the friendship left on paper.
Collaborated with
Friends from the editorial board of the Magpie at DeWitt Clinton High School. In the summer of 1954, at the MacDowell Colony together, Stein convinced Baldwin to publish the essays that became Notes of a Native Son, and edited the book. Their letters were published as Native Sons in 2005.
