History & cultural connections

The history of Hôtel d’Orsay

Long before the current hotel, this address was a residence associated with a surgeon to Napoleon I, according to the hotel’s history. By the Paris Exposition of 1900, it was welcoming travellers as a hotel. Four eighteenth-century figurative sculptures still decorate the façade.[1]

The present establishment took shape in 1998, when Hôtel Solférino and Hôtel Résidence Orsay were joined together. That makes the current Hôtel d’Orsay the result of two earlier hotels coming together, rather than a new name for the famous railway station or museum nearby.[1]

Its art collection brings together older portraits from the French and Italian schools with contemporary work. A diptych by Jean-Pierre Bertrand hangs beneath the glass roof; sculptor Roseline Granet created a bronze specifically for the inner garden. Japanese-style hanging scrolls and paintings from Asia add another strand to the collection.[1]

The 42 rooms continue that interest in art through antique furniture, fabrics and original pictures. You encounter the collection in the ordinary spaces of a stay, from breakfast beneath the glass roof to the garden and bedrooms. The museum next door provides the setting for an art-focused visit, while the hotel has its own smaller collection to explore.[2][1]
