History & cultural connections
The history of 10 rue de Ponthieu
Rue de Ponthieu was laid out in the late 18th century on the grounds of the former royal nursery garden, which had been given to the Count of Artois, the future King Charles X. It is named after Ponthieu, a region of Picardy that belonged to the count's estates.[1]
A hotel called the Hôtel du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées is listed at number 10 in the Paris trade directory of 1913, and the name appears again in newspapers of 1919 and 1921. The hotel's owners say the building dates from the late 19th century and that three floors and its Art Deco front were added in 1922. No permit or archive record confirms these dates.[2][3][4][5]
Until 2017 the hotel was run by a company whose board included members of the Vuitton family. In January 2017 the Esprit de France hotel group bought the hotel business for €7 million. After a renovation designed by Dimore Studio, which kept tiles and mosaics from the 1920s, the hotel reopened in the summer of 2018.[6][7][8]
The hotel's bar is named after the British novelist Daphne du Maurier, the author of Rebecca. The hotel says she had a secret romance there in her youth. Her biographers record holidays in Paris while she was at school near the city in 1925, but they do not name the hotel.[8][9]
