History & cultural connections
The history of La Clef Champs-Élysées Paris
The hotel occupies one plot with three street addresses: 44 and 46 rue de Bassano and 11 rue Magellan. Gecina, the property company that owned the building in 2004, dated it to 1907 and listed it as mainly residential, with 34 apartments and some business space. The architects Félix Le Nevé and Albert d'Hont designed the building, and its façade won one of six prizes in the Paris façade competition for buildings completed in 1907.[1][2][3][4][5]
The hotel's operator, the Singapore lodging company Ascott, says the Hennessy cognac family built the building in 1907, and in 2016 it called the building the family's former private residence. The Almanach national, the French government's official yearbook, lists James Hennessy, deputy for Cognac in the Charente department, at 21 avenue de l'Alma in its 1906–1907 edition and at 46 rue de Bassano in its 1908 edition.[6][14][7][8]
James Hennessy (1867–1945) came from a family of cognac distillers and served as a naval officer before joining the family business. He was a deputy for Charente from 1906 to 1921 and a senator from 1921 until his death in 1945. The 1923 Tout-Paris society directory still lists him at 46 rue de Bassano, and the 1923 members' yearbook of the Union interalliée club gives his address as 44 and 46 rue de Bassano. The 1924 edition of the biographical dictionary Qui êtes-vous? lists him at number 46 and says he collected paintings, tapestries and art objects and kept a racing stable.[9][10][11][12]
In the 1920s, number 46 was an apartment building, and James Hennessy was one of several residents. The 1923 Tout-Paris also lists the Comte and Comtesse de Saulty at the address. In 1952, Roclaine, an insulation company, gave the same address in its advertisements.[10][13]
Ascott first announced La Clef Champs-Élysées Paris in 2016, for a 2018 opening. The building contractor Pradeau Morin says the works turned the existing building into a 70-room five-star hotel with a gym, a restaurant and a bar. It names ERTIM Architectes as the architect and gives November 2018 as the handover date. The designer Jean-Philippe Nuel created the interiors.[14][15][16]
On 7 February 2019, Ascott announced that the hotel had just opened after a two-year renovation. It was the third property in The Crest Collection, a luxury brand Ascott launched in 2016. The announcement said Imperial Treasure would open its first restaurant in France in the building later that year.[16]
