History & cultural connections
The history of 8 avenue Rapp
Avenue Rapp was opened in 1858 as avenue du Champ de Mars and renamed in 1864 after Count Jean Rapp (1773–1821), a French general.[1]
City of Paris planning records show that a hotel and a shop stood at 8 avenue Rapp until 1999, when their demolition was approved. The six-storey hotel that replaced them was approved in February 2000, and its façades were revised in 2001. The hotel calls the building Haussmannian, but that describes its style, which copies Paris apartment buildings of the 1850s to 1870s, not its age.[2]
In 2004 the hotel was called the Hôtel Derby Alma and belonged to a small group, Derby Hotels. The Inwood hotel group took over its management in late 2011 and listed it among its hotels in May 2012. The designer Oscar Lucien Ono, of the studio Maison Numéro 20, later redecorated it on the theme of Paris haute couture, and the work was finished by May 2019.[3][4][5][6]
At 29 avenue Rapp, about 150 metres from the hotel, is the apartment building that Jules Lavirotte designed in 1900 with ceramics by Alexandre Bigot. Its façade won the City of Paris façade competition of 1901, and it has been a listed historic monument since 1964. About 230 metres west of the hotel, on rue de l'Université, the sculptor Auguste Rodin had his studios at the state marble depot, the Dépôt des Marbres, from 1880 to 1917.[7][8]
