History & cultural connections

The history of Le Roch Hôtel & Spa

Rue Saint-Roch takes its name from the church of Saint-Roch, which it runs alongside. The stretch where the hotel stands, between rue Saint-Honoré and avenue de l'Opéra, was a lane recorded in 1495 as the ruelle Michaut Riegnaut. It became rue Gaillon in 1578, rue Neuve Saint-Roch and then rue Saint-Roch in the 17th century, and rue de la Montagne during the Revolution. The street took its present form in 1879, when the city joined it to the former rue du Dauphin to the south and renumbered the whole length.[1]

The buildings on the hotel's plot date from the first half of the 19th century, according to the Paris planning agency APUR, which also records a rehabilitation in 2016. Around 1900 the address was a day nursery. A guide to Paris charities published in 1900 lists the Crèche Saint-Roch at 28 rue Saint-Roch. A 1912 directory, Paris charitable et bienfaisant, adds that the nursery was founded in 1882 by a churchman it names only as Monseigneur Marbeau.[2][3][4]

The company that runs the hotel, Le Roch Hôtel & Spa SASU, was registered in June 2013. It belongs to the Compagnie Hôtelière de Bagatelle, a Paris group whose other hotel companies include the Chess Hotel and L'Hôtel de l'Abbaye. A press release of January 2016 announced the hotel for spring 2016. It named the office of the architect Vincent Bastie, the interior designer Sarah Poniatowski-Lavoine and the chef Arnaud Faye, who wrote the restaurant and bar menus. In April 2016 the hotel's website still promised a spring opening, and on 14 July 2016 it gave that day as the opening date. The hotel marked its tenth anniversary in June 2026.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

Poniatowski-Lavoine and her studio, Maison Sarah Lavoine, designed the interiors. The studio describes a lobby floor of exotic wood stained dark, walnut parquet in the rooms, white marble bathrooms and lava stone on the floors of the pool and spa. The design magazine Ideat reported in October 2016 that Bastie had arranged the rooms in two wings, called Argenteuil and Saint-Roch, separated by a planted terrace on the first floor. Ideat also noted that Poniatowski-Lavoine had opened her first shop at 9 rue Saint-Roch, on the same street.[11][12]
