History & cultural connections
The history of Le Walt
Avenue de La Motte-Picquet, where the hotel stands, was once called avenue de l'École Militaire. Its stretch between rue de Grenelle and today's place Joffre was laid out around 1680, and the rest was opened in 1775. It is named after Toussaint Guillaume Picquet de La Motte (1720–1791), a French naval commander.[1]
The present building dates from the early 2000s. In 2002 the City of Paris approved the demolition of an older hotel and shop on the site, in a building of three storeys above the ground floor, and the construction of a new six-storey hotel with 25 rooms. The new hotel was trading as Le Walt by 2006.[2][3]
The hotel's 2013 website credited its decoration to Paul Sartres, and the current website names no designer. The company that runs the hotel was called Hôtel de l'Industrie until 2025, when it took the hotel's name.[4][5]
At the end of the avenue stands the École Militaire, the military academy founded in 1751 and designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. It has been a classified historic monument since 1990.[6]
