History & cultural connections

The history of Hôtel Lumen Paris Louvre

Rue des Pyramides is named after the French army's victory at the Battle of the Pyramids in Egypt on 21 July 1798. Its southern, arcaded section, from the rue de Rivoli to the rue Saint-Honoré, was opened under an order of the Consuls of 9 October 1801. The northern section, where the hotel stands, between the rue Saint-Honoré and the avenue de l'Opéra, was opened under a decree of 27 February 1877. The passage Saint-Roch, a lane opened in 1741 beside the church, comes out onto the rue des Pyramides at the hotel.[1]

The hotel occupies a Haussmann-style building on the 1877 section of the street. Before the conversion the building was a bank, according to the hotelier Herman Bal and to two magazine articles published when the hotel opened. None of them names the bank or gives the building's date.[4][5][6]

Herman Bal, who had worked at the Plaza Athénée and the Hôtel Lancaster, began the project in 2005 and opened the hotel in September 2007, after two years of permits and works, with 32 rooms including two suites. The architect Alain Daronian handled the conversion. The Italian designer Claudio Colucci designed the furnishings and the crystal light fittings in a mix of baroque and contemporary styles, taking light as his theme because lumen is the Latin word for light. Four corner rooms named Saint-Roch had two windows onto the church and a crystal chandelier that hung from ceiling to floor.[2][4][5][6]

The first restaurant, Le Passage Saint Roch, served a menu devised by the food writer Frédérick Grasser Hermé and cooked by Philippe Gasmand, formerly of the Paris caterer Lenôtre. By 2010 the hotel called it a café-brasserie with a terrace. In a December 2009 interview Herman Bal said that a second phase of works, designed by Giuseppe Chierchia, had added five rooms. By 2011 the restaurant had become Oscar, serving Italian fusion cuisine, and by 2018 it was called Lumen, with the Japanese chef Akira Sugiura cooking French, Italian and Japanese dishes.[4][3][6][7][8][9]

Atout France classified the hotel with four stars on 27 February 2024, listing 39 rooms. In April 2025 BG Hôtellerie registered a new company, Lumen SAS, to run the hotel, and the hotel joined the group at the end of 2025. BG Hôtellerie is a family-owned hotel investment company based in Nogent-sur-Marne that also owns the Hôtel Lord Byron near the Champs-Élysées and the Hôtel Mayflower near the Gare Saint-Lazare. BG Hôtellerie says that from the end of 2026 the hotel will be extended, its rooms and restaurant completely renovated, and new services added.[10][11][12]
