History & cultural connections
A 2016 hotel designed around natural history
Hôtel Monge opened in summer 2016. A contemporary report in L’Hôtellerie Restauration describes the project as the work of a couple who already owned Hôtel Fabric. They brought designers Marie-Agnès Louboutin and Patrice Henry, who had also worked on Fabric, to this 30-room hotel in a Haussmann-era building.[1]
The designers imagined the home of a traveller interested in natural history and ethnology, surrounded by objects collected on journeys. That traveller was a design idea, not a documented former resident. It gave them a way to connect the interiors with the nearby Jardin des Plantes.[1]
Butterflies, parrots and botanical patterns carry that idea through the rooms. The current hotel describes Deyrolle motifs alongside mouldings, Hungarian-point parquet and Carrara-marble fireplaces. These details combine the natural-history theme with the appearance of a nineteenth-century Paris apartment.[2]
The setting contributes to the experience as well: some rooms look toward the Arènes de Lutèce, while the Jardin des Plantes is nearby. Those views and the botanical interiors connect the hotel to the surrounding neighbourhood.[2][3]
