History & cultural connections

The history of Hôtel Montalembert

Hôtel Montalembert opened in 1926, in the years when the Left Bank’s galleries, publishers and cafés were drawing writers and artists to this part of Paris. Its centenary account describes the hotel becoming a meeting place for the neighbourhood, with the restaurant used by local regulars as well as travellers.[1][2]

By 1990, the Montalembert was being presented as a pioneer of the Paris boutique hotel: a small property with a distinct design and personal service. One unusual detail survives in the hotel’s own account of its innovations. It says it introduced duvets in place of the traditional combination of sheets and blankets. That is the hotel’s claim to a small change in the way Paris hotels made their beds.[2][3]

The property joined B Signature in 2016. Its later interiors by Pascal Allaman look back to the 1930s through geometric carpets, ebony headboards, warm colours and aged brass. The rooms were designed to feel like Parisian apartments, with different sizes and layouts rather than a single repeated scheme.[2][4][3]

In 2026 the hotel marked one hundred years with a menu, music evenings and a guided walk through Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The anniversary also inspired a house fragrance and a spa treatment. These are present-day ways of celebrating the hotel’s age; the building’s 1926 opening and its subsequent redesigns remain separate parts of the story.[1]
