History & cultural connections
Old houses, James Joyce and a cellar cabaret
The hotel traces the history of this group of buildings to 1642, when Louis XIII allowed Jean Tambonneau, president of the Chambre des Comptes, to build a house on the Pré-aux-Clercs. The present hotel occupies an address that has changed uses over several centuries.[1]
James Joyce is more than the name on the bar. According to the hotel’s account, he completed Ulysses in a room that now forms part of the property. Its history page reproduces his announcement of finishing the Ithaca episode on 29 October 1921. The present James Joyce Suite was named in his honour; the hotel does not identify that modern suite as his original room.[1][2]
The vaulted cellars had another life as the Quod Libet cabaret. The hotel connects the venue with the early career of singer and songwriter Léo Ferré, who performed at the piano. Those cellars now house the spa, giving today’s quiet treatment spaces a very different purpose from their musical past.[3]
A complete renovation in 2021 preceded the hotel’s April 2022 opening as Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain. Its present arrangement puts the restaurant, bar and hotel along the same street, with the literary connection carried into the names of the bar and suites.[1][4]
