History & cultural connections

The history of Hôtel Pont Royal

The hotel’s family chronology dates the opening of Hôtel Pont Royal to 1923. It records that Monsieur and Madame Desgardins opened the business to persuade their son-in-law not to leave for Venezuela. Their daughter Lucie and her husband Robert Soalhat became part of the family story that shaped the hotel for decades.[1]

Robert Soalhat created the basement bar. It became a meeting place for writers associated with Gallimard, La Table Ronde and Le Seuil. The hotel names Romain Gary, Antoine Blondin, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir among those who frequented it. These are connections with the bar and its conversations, rather than evidence that each writer slept in a hotel room.[1]

The family continued running the hotel until its sale after Pierre Soalhat’s death in 1989. A later two-year renovation ended with a reopening in September 1999. In 2022, Pont Royal joined Champagne Hospitality. The present hotel therefore combines the earlier family business and literary reputation with several later changes in ownership and design.[1]

Today the bar is called F-Sharp, and the Library Lounge gives the literary theme a visible home. The hotel’s programme lists jazz sessions in these spaces. Its Pont Royal Encounters also bring authors to dinner with journalist Olivier Barrot; the 2025–2026 season included Alice Ferney, Jean-Christophe Rufin and Vanessa Schneider. Visitors can take part by reserving a current event, rather than simply reading a list of famous past names.[2][3]
