History & cultural connections

A modern building with an artistic past

Renaissance Paris République occupies a 1970s building designed by architect Jean-Jacques Fernier. Before becoming a hotel, the building served as offices and later housed artists. Its repeated rounded windows remain a distinctive feature of rue René Boulanger.[1][3]

Marriott announced the opening of Renaissance Paris République in May 2016. It was the brand’s sixth hotel in Paris, with 121 rooms. Interior designer Didier Gomez used natural wood, leather and contemporary artworks to connect the new hotel with the neighborhood’s artists and workshops.[2]

For the 2016 opening, Didier Gomez combined polished finishes with exposed concrete and furnished rooms with pieces associated with Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand. The design also used tree patterns, cloud-shaped lights and a planted terrace. The current rooms retain the studio theme, with broad windows and work areas.[2][4]

Renaissance Paris République opened in 2016 with Origin, a French restaurant led by chef Bénédicte Van der Motte, and the Martin Bar. By October 2026, the restaurant and bar both use the Martin name. The hotel also presents exhibitions featuring a different artist each quarter.[2][3][5]
