Where to Stay in Le Marais
Choose Le Pavillon de la Reine or Cour des Vosges to sleep on the place des Vosges, Le Grand Mazarin or Hôtel Dupond-Smith for the central streets near Hôtel de Ville, and Experimental Marais, Maison Proust or Hôtel Jules & Jim for the restaurants and bars of the northern Marais.

Le Marais covers parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank of the Seine. Its streets are older and narrower than the boulevards built elsewhere in Paris, and many of its seventeenth-century mansions, the hôtels particuliers, are now museums. The Musée national Picasso-Paris occupies one of them, the Hôtel Salé. The place des Vosges, completed in 1612, is the oldest planned square in Paris.
The quarter has several centers. Rue des Rosiers has been the heart of Jewish Paris since the nineteenth century and is still where people go for the food. Since the 1990s, the bars around rue Vieille du Temple and rue des Archives have made the Marais the center of gay Paris. The Marais is also one of the city's international tourist zones, where shops are allowed to open on Sundays and in the evening.
Who the Marais suits
The Marais suits travelers who want to walk to museums, restaurants and shops, and who plan to spend their evenings out. It is also central. From the southern streets, the Hôtel de Ville, the Île Saint-Louis and Notre-Dame are all within walking distance.
Look elsewhere if you need a large hotel, parking at your hotel, or a quiet street at night. Many Marais hotels run their own bars, and several stay open to the public late at night.
Getting around
The Marais has no single main station. The best stop depends on which part of the quarter you stay in.
- Southern Marais, near Hôtel de Ville and rue de Rivoli: Hôtel de Ville (lines 1 and 11), Saint-Paul (line 1) and Pont Marie (line 7).
- Place des Vosges: Chemin Vert (line 8), Saint-Paul (line 1) and Bastille (lines 1, 5 and 8).
- Northern Marais, toward rue de Bretagne: Arts et Métiers (lines 3 and 11), Temple (line 3), Rambuteau (line 11) and Filles du Calvaire (line 8).
- Western edge, near rue Saint-Martin: Réaumur–Sébastopol (lines 3 and 4) and Étienne Marcel (line 4), with Châtelet–Les Halles (RER A, B and D) a short walk south.
From Charles de Gaulle airport, RER B runs to Châtelet–Les Halles, on the western side of the quarter, in about 50 minutes, according to Hôtel Dupond-Smith. From Orly airport, Métro line 14 has run directly to Châtelet–Les Halles and Gare de Lyon since June 2024.
Line 1 runs from Hôtel de Ville and Saint-Paul to Gare de Lyon without a change. Line 4, from Étienne Marcel and Réaumur–Sébastopol, reaches Gare de l'Est, Gare du Nord and Montparnasse. Line 7 links Pont Marie with Gare de l'Est.
The tradeoffs
Late-night noise is the main one. Several hotels run bars or clubs that are open to the public after dark:
- Les Bains Paris: the club runs until 4:30 am from Thursday to Saturday.
- Le Grand Mazarin: on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, DJ sets continue in the basement bar until 2 am.
- Maison Proust: the salons and bar are open to non-residents until 1 am.
- Hôtel Jules & Jim: the courtyard bar terrace is open to the public until 11 pm, and the courtyard rooms look onto it.
Rooms are often compact. Classic doubles at Hôtel de JoBo measure 15 to 16 m², and the smallest room at Hôtel Jules & Jim is 12 m². Older buildings also mean stairs: the top-floor Superior rooms at Cour des Vosges, the Junior Suite at Hôtel du Petit Moulin and Le Petit Pavillon at Le Pavillon de la Reine are reached without an elevator.
Parking is scarce. Experimental Marais has none of its own, and Hôtel du Petit Moulin arranges parking at a sister hotel. For museum plans, note that the Centre Pompidou, at the western edge of the quarter, closed for renovation on 22 September 2025 and is scheduled to reopen in 2030.
Choosing a hotel in the Marais
On the place des Vosges, Le Pavillon de la Reine & Spa has 56 rooms set back from the north side of the square behind its own courtyard. It has a restaurant with one Michelin star and a spa, but the hotel describes no room as facing the square. Cour des Vosges, on the same square, is much smaller, with twelve rooms and suites in a seventeenth-century mansion and a private Roman-style bath. Hôtel de JoBo, a 24-room four-star hotel on rue d'Ormesson, is a short walk away, near Saint-Paul and the Musée Carnavalet.
In the center, near Hôtel de Ville, Le Grand Mazarin opened in September 2023 with 61 rooms, a heated 17-meter indoor pool and connecting rooms. Its largest set of connecting rooms sleeps ten. Hôtel Dupond-Smith, on rue des Guillemites, is the smallest choice, with eight rooms and suites, room service at any hour and massages in the room.
Several design hotels are in the northern Marais, around rue du Temple and the Carreau du Temple. Experimental Marais has 43 rooms, a restaurant, a cocktail bar and a spa with an indoor pool. Maison Proust, opposite the Carreau du Temple, has 23 rooms decorated by Jacques Garcia as a tribute to the novelist Marcel Proust. Hôtel du Petit Moulin, on rue de Poitou, has 17 rooms designed by Christian Lacroix behind a preserved bakery storefront. Hôtel Jules & Jim, on rue des Gravilliers, is a 23-room four-star hotel with a courtyard bar.
On the western edge, Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers has 64 rooms on rue Saint-Martin, a seventh-floor rooftop bar and connecting rooms for up to six people. Les Bains Paris, near Étienne Marcel station, has 39 rooms in the building that housed the Les Bains Douches nightclub from 1978 to 2010. Both are closer to Châtelet–Les Halles and its RER lines than to the place des Vosges.
Two hotels sit just outside the quarter. SO/ Paris, on the Seine near the Île Saint-Louis, has 162 rooms, and some face the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. Maison Bréguet, a 50-room hotel near Bastille, has an eight-meter indoor pool.
