History & cultural connections
An old artists’ hotel, reopened in 2021
Hôtel Saint-André des Arts traces its history to the early nineteenth century. Musicians, actors and singers were part of its clientele long before the present interiors. In a 2021 interview, manager Josselin Hütter said the building had been a hotel for as far back as the team’s research could establish.[1][4]
In that interview, Hütter described a reported stay of several months by Serge Gainsbourg. He explained that the hotel’s artistic past helped inspire the renovation’s references to the 1960s and 1970s, the decades the hotel group describes as its heyday.[4][5]
The hotel reopened in 2021 after a complete restoration, joining the Hôtels Paris Rive Gauche collection. Chloé Nègre redesigned the interiors, while art director Leslie David created the colourful geometric visual identity. Parts of the older building remained prominent: the heavy oak entrance door, exposed beams in some rooms, rooms tucked under the eaves and the stone vaults of the new wellness area.[5][4]
The design makes specific references to the period. The reopening account names Verner Panton’s Fun lights, Vico Magistretti’s Eclisse lamps, Henry Massonnet’s Tam Tam stools and Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s Componibili bedside units. Nègre added bespoke pieces, including small tables with flower-shaped bases. Fabric showing Jean Cocteau’s Le Dormeur was used inside the elevator.[5]
The current rooms continue that mix of bright colour, geometric shapes and vintage-inspired furniture, with GUBI lighting, Artemide lamps and fabrics from Pierre Frey and Lelièvre. The bar uses black marble and walnut-burl tables. Together, these details explain why a hotel with nineteenth-century roots looks back most visibly to the 1960s and 1970s.[1][2][3][5]
