History & cultural connections
The history of Prince Roland Bonaparte's house
Avenue d'Iéna takes its name from the nearby Pont d'Iéna and was created by a decree of 1864. Rue Fresnel, behind the hotel, is named after the engineer and physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827).[1]
Prince Roland Bonaparte (1858–1924), a geographer and botanist from the Bonaparte family, commissioned the house from the architect Ernest Janty in 1892. It was built for his family, his geography library and his collections of dried plants. Members of the Société centrale des architectes visited it in June 1896, while it was still being built. The house runs from avenue d'Iéna down to rue Fresnel, fifteen metres lower.[2][3]
Roland Bonaparte's daughter, Marie Bonaparte, lived in the house until she married Prince George of Greece in December 1907. She later became a psychoanalyst and helped Sigmund Freud leave Vienna in 1938. King George I of Greece, the father of her future husband, came to lunch there in November 1907. Roland Bonaparte died in the house on 14 April 1924.[4][5][6][7]
By 1926 the house belonged to the Suez Canal Company, which had the architect Michel Roux-Spitz add storeys. It later held the offices of France's foreign-trade agency, the Centre Français du Commerce Extérieur. Its façades, its grand staircase and its main reception rooms have been a listed historic monument since 2009.[8][9][2]
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, a group based in Hong Kong, restored the building over four years and opened its first European hotel there on 17 December 2010, with 81 rooms and interiors by Pierre-Yves Rochon. An extension into the neighbouring building at 8 avenue d'Iéna later brought it to 100 rooms. According to the hotel, its Shang Palace restaurant held a Michelin star from 2011 to 2024.[10][11][12]
