History & cultural connections
The history of Terrass" Hôtel
Rue Joseph-de-Maistre was called rue de Maistre until 1941. It is named after Count Joseph de Maistre (1753–1821), a French politician, writer and philosopher. Its stretch near rue Lepic appears as a country lane on maps of Paris from 1672 and 1730.[1]
The hotel says that in 1911 Edmond Hurand, who already owned the Élysée-Montmartre dance hall on boulevard de Rochechouart, bought a brasserie and the plot beside it. He built a 120-room hotel there with a roof terrace looking over Paris. Paris directories list the Terrass' hôtel at 12 rue de Maistre by 1913, and a 1914 advertisement describes it as newly built.[2][3][4]
According to the hotel's history of 2015, Edmond Hurand sold the hotel in 1920 and bought it back in 1923 at the request of his son Maurice, who ran it from 1925. Maurice's son Jean-Max Hurand enlarged it in 1954 and added a bar, a brasserie and a restaurant. The same history says these became a meeting place for artists and writers, naming the writer Colette, the actors Michel Simon and Pierre Brasseur and the pianist Samson François. In 1994 Jean-Max's daughter Christine and her husband Jean-Luc Binet took over, and their son Romain Binet has run the hotel since 2014. The family's hotel group now trades as Biografy.[5][6]
The ground floor and terrace were rebuilt over seven months before a reopening in June 2015. The hotel closed again on 2 July 2023 for an enlargement that the trade press expected to finish in 2025, and its rooftop bar was open again by December 2025. The architect Muriel Gaz has led the hotel's recent renovations, including the 7th-floor restaurant, which is named Edmond after the hotel's founder, Edmond Hurand.[5][7][8][9][2]
Montmartre Cemetery, across the street, opened in 1825. The painter Edgar Degas, the film director François Truffaut and the composers Lili and Nadia Boulanger are buried there. Further along rue Caulaincourt, at number 73, a building of seven artists' studios built in 1895–96 was used by Théophile Steinlen, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Marcel Duchamp, among others. It has been a listed historic monument since 2022.[10][11][12][13]
