History & cultural connections
The history of 10–12 rue Cognacq-Jay
Rue Cognacq-Jay was opened in 1928 on land owned by Ernest Cognacq (1839–1928) and his wife Marie-Louise Cognacq, born Jaÿ (1838–1925), who founded the Samaritaine department stores. From 1900 to 1926 the land had held the Magic-City amusement park. Property companies quickly built up the new street.[1][2]
The hotel occupies an office building of eight levels from around 1930. In the 1990s and 2000s it housed the health businesses of the industrial-gas company Air Liquide. In 2013 and 2014 the City of Paris approved its conversion into a hotel, with a roof terrace on the seventh floor.[3][4]
The hotel opened in 2015 as Hôtel Juliana. In 2025 the Spanish group H10 Hotels bought it and renamed it The One Alma Paris. Éric Cleton, who had headed the hotel's operating company since 2017, left its presidency with the sale.[5][6][7][8]
French television had studios on rue Cognacq-Jay. On 22 September 1978 the book programme Apostrophes was broadcast live from them, with the American writer Charles Bukowski among its guests.[9]
