Paul Guillaume's gallery joined African sculpture to the Paris avant-garde and built an early market for Modigliani, Soutine, and de Chirico.
Paul Guillaume opened his first gallery at 6 rue de Miromesnil in February 1914, at twenty-two. Guillaume Apollinaire, who had encouraged the young dealer, supplied intellectual credibility and contacts to an enterprise begun without inherited capital or formal training.
The gallery gave sustained commercial support to artists whose markets were still fragile. Guillaume represented André Derain, Giorgio de Chirico, Chaïm Soutine, and Amedeo Modigliani; he rented Modigliani a studio, arranged exhibitions, and promoted the painter with the Latin slogan “Novo Pilota,” presenting himself as the new pilot of modern art.
African sculpture was integral to the program rather than an ethnographic afterthought. Guillaume exhibited, collected, photographed, and wrote about African works while hanging them in dialogue with modern painting. His activities also connected the Paris market to international collectors, most importantly Albert C. Barnes in the United States.
The gallery moved to 59 rue La Boétie in 1921. Guillaume's private collection and dealership remained intertwined until his death in 1934. His widow Domenica later transformed the collection through sales and acquisitions; the resulting Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection entered the French state and is now displayed at the Musée de l'Orangerie.
