The history of Hôtel Bachaumont and its street
Rue Bachaumont was cut in 1899 through the site of the Passage du Saumon, a covered shopping arcade between rue Montorgueil and rue Montmartre. The arcade was demolished to make way for the street, which was named in 1900 after the 18th-century writer Louis Petit de Bachaumont.[1][2]
The hotel building dates from about 1900. Remodelista and Wallpaper* report that it was a hotel in the 1920s and later housed a medical clinic. Bonjour Paris reports that the old hotel closed after the Les Halles wholesale food market left central Paris, a move that took place in 1969.[3][4][5][6][7]
Samy Marciano's La Clé Group reopened the building as Hôtel Bachaumont in 2015, after three years of work. Dorothée Meilichzon designed the 49 rooms and almost all of the furniture.[4][3]
The restaurant page on the hotel's website describes 18th-century debates hosted by "Monsieur Bachaumont" at a "Grand Hôtel de Bachaumont". Rue Bachaumont did not exist until 1899, so that story does not describe this building.[8][1]
At the corner of rue Bachaumont and rue Montorgueil, a plaque unveiled by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, in October 2014 marks the place where Bruno Lenoir and Jean Diot were arrested in January 1750. Lenoir and Diot were executed in Paris in July 1750, the last people put to death in France for homosexuality.[9][10]
