History & cultural connections
The history of Hôtel La Bourdonnais
Avenue de La Bourdonnais was laid out in 1770 beside the École Militaire, the military academy founded under Louis XV. It is named after Bertrand François Mahé de La Bourdonnais (1699–1753), a French naval officer and governor of the islands now called Mauritius and Réunion.[1]
The hotel was owned by one family for about half a century before the Inwood hotel group bought it in May 2012, when it was a three-star hotel with 54 rooms.[2]
Until 2004 the building also held a gastronomic restaurant, La Cantine des Gourmets. According to the LesRestos guide, its chef Jean-François Rouquette left for the Hôtel Scribe in 2003. He later led the kitchen of PUR' at the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme. The hotel's tea room became the Gloster cocktail bar in 2017, and the bar reopened as Minuit Express after the 2026 renovation.[3][4][5][6]
About 300 metres away, James Joyce lived at 2 square de Robiac from 1925 to 1931, his longest Paris address, while writing the book that became Finnegans Wake.[7]
