They met in Paris in 1949, a year after Baldwin arrived. In 1950 they left for the Happersberger family's village in the Swiss Alps, where Baldwin — pulled back from the edge of a ravine by Lucien on a hike — settled on the title Go Tell It on the Mountain. Giovanni's Room is dedicated to him, and Baldwin called him the love of his life. The partnership, in its shifting forms, ran to Baldwin's death in 1987.
