Who they are in the book

Geoffrey arrives with Katharine and an airplane that transforms the expedition's movement. He appears sociable and useful, but his desert work is also connected to British intelligence. Exploration is already becoming military knowledge before the group openly breaks along national lines.

He discovers Katharine and Almásy's affair. The response is not a private confrontation alone. Geoffrey aims his aircraft at Almásy in an apparent attempt to kill all three people involved.

The crash kills Geoffrey and injures Katharine. His action destroys the expedition's personal world and makes the plane, previously a tool of mapping, into a weapon.
