Le Ballu is at 30 rue Ballu in the 9th arrondissement, at the foot of Montmartre, and takes up numbers 28 and 30. Place de Clichy (lines 2 and 13) and Blanche (line 2) Métro stations are a 4-minute walk away. The hotel gives walking times of 5 minutes to the Moulin Rouge and 6 minutes to the Musée de la Vie romantique.

The 35 rooms, 2 of them adapted for guests with reduced mobility, range from 18 m² doubles to 47 m² apartments with a separate living room. Every room has a kitchenette with a microwave, fridge, kettle and Nespresso machine. The architect Thomas Vidalenc converted the two buildings, numbers 28 and 30 rue Ballu, into the hotel, which opened in 2019. He designed much of the furniture and mixed it with pieces by designers from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Bosnia. The hotel says its decoration mixes old comic-strip graphics with 1960s Eastern European design, as a nod to Syldavia, the imaginary Eastern European country in Hergé's Tintin comic books.

The restaurant serves a seasonal menu from noon to 11 pm without a break, inside or in the garden, with a brunch on Sundays. The covered, heated pool measures 8 metres by 2 metres and has a sauna beside it. Guests can reserve the pool for a private 45-minute session.

History & cultural connections

The history of 28 and 30 rue Ballu

Rue Ballu was opened in 1841 as rue de Boulogne, on land belonging to the Greffulhe brothers and Paul de Ségur. In 1886 it was renamed after Théodore Ballu (1817–1885), the architect who was put in charge of rebuilding the Hôtel de Ville of Paris in 1872.[1]

The hotel's older building, number 28 rue Ballu, was built as a house and studio for Charles Wislin (1852–1932), a landscape painter who showed at the Salon des artistes français from 1880 to 1909. His architect, Gaston Dézermaux, applied for the permit in July 1890. The gable and a small tower rose more than three metres above the height allowed by the 1884 building rules, but the French government's buildings council approved the design for its artistic character. The house was finished in 1891. Iron wall ties on the gable are shaped to spell out that date, and a large W for Wislin is carved on the front. The brick-and-stone front is in a Flemish style, although Wislin came from Franche-Comté in eastern France, not from Flanders.[2]

By the 2010s numbers 28 and 30 rue Ballu were offices belonging to Sacem, the French society that collects music royalties. Sacem sold them in 2015 to the developer Aream, which obtained a permit for a hotel. In 2016 Aream sold the project to Hôtelière de l'Étoile, a company headed by Edith Vidalenc, and the architect Thomas Vidalenc designed the conversion. The hotel opened in 2019 with four stars and was classified five-star in May 2024.[3][4][5][6]

Paul Cézanne took an apartment across the street, at 31 rue Ballu, in October 1899. From 1904 the Boulanger family lived at 36 rue Ballu, where Nadia Boulanger taught music for most of her life. In 2021 the corner where rue Ballu meets rue de Vintimille was renamed place Lili-et-Nadia-Boulanger, for her and her sister, the composer Lili Boulanger.[7][8]
