Stendhal

Marked probable because the source is: Larousse, running through the years around 1829–30 in which Balzac worked his way into the Paris press and publishing world, says he became Latouche's friend and "sans doute" — most likely — made Stendhal's acquaintance in person. Nothing here fixes a date, a room or an occasion, and the atlas should not invent one. What is not in doubt is that each read the other: Larousse has the young Balzac reading De l'amour with passion, and in 1840, in his own short-lived Revue parisienne, Balzac saluted La Chartreuse de Parme in terms the same encyclopedia calls surprising — very nearly the whole of the recognition Stendhal received in his lifetime.
