It follows the form of Septuagenarian Stew: poems and short stories interleaved rather than separated, drawn from the work he left behind. Black Sparrow issued 226 signed copies alongside the trade printing — signed before he died, which is what makes the limited issue of a posthumous book possible. The title names what the writing life had come down to: betting on the muse the way he had spent forty years betting on horses.
